University Sq. to Universal Sq.
Presented to you is transformation from a Square for the University to universal square for the city. Universal Square is set to become the heart of a new creative precinct – a green core connecting between surrounding artist studios, galleries, community spaces and creative enterprise. The site will break beyond its current hard edge to merge with the surrounding streets creating a new, highly active civic space. Attracting diverse users to the area, Universal Square is set to become a new and exciting social centre for Melbourne.
A PLACE TO RALLY
Crowds spill out onto the street as the protestors prepare for the march along Swanston St to Federation Square via the State Library.
A PLACE TO SHARE
A band entertains the crowd in between keynote speakers at the Universal Square Autumn Lecture series held at the new amphitheatre stage. The level change of the sunken amphitheatre creates opportunity for seating. The existing gabion tower holds two state-of-the-art outdoor LCD screens – one facing south to the amphitheatre for smaller crowds (shown here) and the other facing north for larger public gatherings.
The old Pelham St roundabout is converted to a native grass garden. The crowd gathers around for the monthly art and craft market where many of the artist from the surround area exhibit and sell their works.
SPACE TO RELAX
Within the park area, the points where pathways intersect provide places to sit and relax during the heat of summer, areas for small intimate gatherings and artist curated areas for public art exhibitions.
